Bundesliga side Schalke to ditch fines for players… and make them work shifts in the club shop instead

The Bundesliga side have introduced new disciplinary measures to ensure their side are ready for the new campaign

Schalke will now be punishing their players by making them work in the club shop rather than fining them.

If the players go out before a match day, show up late for training or receive a red card for violent conduct then they will be spending a stint behind the till.

Christian Heidel, Schalke’s sporting executive, told Bild: “You can’t really hurt the lads with fines.

“We also have the leisure time punishment. And it might happen that players have to work in the club shop on their free day instead of getting fined.”

New head coach Domenico Tedesco is keen to progress with these punitive measures to ensure his side are fully prepared for the new term.

He added: “This is not completely new, because some of the penalties were already aligned in the last season.

The side are expected to find out the full details during their pre-season training trip to Austria.

Schalke players could also have to work for a charity organisation in their free time as another form of retribution.

Heidel moved to the King Blues at the end of the 2015/16 season to join the the club’s sports board.

He learnt these discipline techniques under the management of Thomas Tuchel at Mainz 05.

The Schalke players are able to pay off fines easily due to their astronomical salaries, so the club will hope that this new approach will deter bad behaviour.
