Remember Santi Cazorla?
We’re joking, obviously, but it’s certainly not a name we’ve heard much during a live game in recent memory.
The Arsenal midfielder hasn’t featured at all since exacerbating a chronic heel injury last October in a 6-0 win over Ludogorets.
Since then Cazorla has undergone not one, not two, not three but EIGHT separate surgeries in an attempt to remedy the issue.
And while he has recently returned to a form of light fitness training, he’s admitted he contemplated retirement to end the pain.
In an interview with Spanish radio station Onda Cero, Cazorla has opened up about his injury hell – and it’s utterly heartbreaking.
“I have no strength in my leg. I am just two weeks out of surgery,” he said.
“I have no muscle mass in my calf, no strength in the tendon, we are still working on getting my Achilles to function again.
“Every day my son asks me if I will play again because he really wants to see me out on the pitch again and I really hope that it will happen soon.”
Cazorla, who makes Arsenal tick and was sorely missed last season as they missed out on the top four, recently signed a new one-year contract extension after Arsene Wenger kept his faith in him.
“I don’t know how long it will take, but I’m convinced that I’ll be back soon,” he added.
“The doctors have told me that a case like mine is one that they probably won’t see again for a long time as it is unusual for an athlete.”
