What is going on with Barcelona this transfer window?
First they tried, and failed, to sign Paulinho. Then Neymar decided the grass was greener in Paris.
Now Barcelona have got players rejecting them in favour of a move to Rennes, who finished ninth in Ligue 1 last season.
Senegalese winger Ismaila Sarr confirmed that he rejected the chance to join Barcelona from Metz, instead linking up with Rennes.
To be fair, you can’t fault his reasoning, as he explained his thought process after completing the €17million move.
Sarr said: “Going from Metz to Barcelona was too big a jump.”
We’d tend to agree, given Sarr would have been competing with Lionel Messi and Neymar for a place in the first-team, as well as Arda Turan and Gerard Deulofeu.
Rennes have recent pedigree when it comes to turning exciting raw wingers into European thoroughbreds.
Ousmane Dembele only required one season in Rennes’ first-team before joining Borussia Dortmund and breaking into the French national side.
Only time will tell whether Sarr has made the right choice, but you’ve got to admire his decision not to settle for a place on the bench at a major club.
If only a few others would take note…
