Liverpool target forces training to be abandoned after ‘horrific’ tackle on own team-mate

RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita has been linked with a big-money move to the Premier League this summer

The name Naby Keita might not have been a familiar one to most football fans before this summer, but it sure is now.

The RB Leipzig midfielder has been the centre of an ongoing and exhausting transfer saga with Liverpool making a number of huge approaches to sign him.

The Reds, according to various reports, have had two bids rejected for Keita – the second an estimated £66m – with Leipzig adamant their star player is not for sale at any cost.

But the saga looks to have taken a new twist on Monday.

Keita is reportedly disgruntled at Leipzig’s unmoved stance having informed the club several times of his wishes to link up with Jurgen Klopp.

And it appears his frustrations got the better of him in training on Monday morning when he ‘brutally’ lunged into his own team-mate Diego Demme, according to German news outlet Kicker.

The training session, as a result, was abandoned by coaches with Demme requiring extensive treatment after the clash.

Here is the aftermath of the altercation, with some Leipzig players refraining Keita on the left while others tend to his victim on the right:

Keita was one of the best players in the Bundesliga last season and inspired the promoted side to a stunning second-placed finish behind eventual champions Bayern Munich.

The Guinea midfielder has a £48m release clause which can’t be activated until next summer, perhaps explaining why Liverpool are so desperate to snap him up this summer.

It remains to be seen whether the Reds will return with a new and improved bid this week.
