Real Madrid have a new No10.
With James Rodriguez on loan at Bayern Munich for the forseeable future (two years) Los Blancos have decided to reward one of their most deserving players with a favourable change of squad number.
That man is Luka Modric.
The Croatian playmaker has worn No19 ever since he signed for Real Madrid in the summer of 2012.
Modric’s Madrid career stuttered in its infancy and fans of La Liga voted him the worst signing of the season.
These days the 31-year-old is possibly the best midfielder in the world.
His passing and invention was key to Madrid’s successful season last term in which they won the league and lifted yet another Champions League trophy.
Modric’s switch of squad number reflects his development and status at arguably the biggest club in the world.
The ex-Spurs man wore No10 for Dinamo Zagreb but has not worn the number, so often associated with the best players in history, for a club since the 2007/08 season.
Although he has worn No10 for Croatia for nearly a decade.
James Rodriguez will wear No11 at Bayern as Arjen Robben has long worn his favoured No10 for the Bavarian giants.
It remains to be seen who will wear No10 in two years’ time when the Colombian playmaker returns to Madrid, if does return at all.
Congratulations, Luka. You deserve it.
