You’ve seen the montages and you’ve read the tweets.
Ever since Romelu Lukaku signed for Man United other fans have been super critical of the ex-Everton forward’s first touch.
We couldn’t resist getting involved either.
The banter merchants could barely contain themselves when footage emerged of Lukaku’s first touch as a Man United player in training.
It wasn’t the best way to go about converting the doubters…
But we’re here to bust the myth that Lukaku’s first touch is heavier than a black hole.
If you look at the stats from last season you’ll see that the Belgian target man recorded FEWER unsuccessful touches than most of his direct rivals.
Diego Costa (107), Alexis Sanchez (94), Harry Kane (83) and Sergio Aguero (79) were all guilty of loose control more often than Lukaku (77).
Costa and Kane in particular are often praised for the link-up play and ability to hold up the ball with their back to goal, yet their numbers compare unfavourable to Lukaku’s.
In fact Opta’s stats suggest Lukaku’s touch was more reliable than four of the Premier League’s most-respected forwards.
Lukaku has scored in each of his pre-season games for Man United – the latest a superb finish from a tight angle against Man City in Houston.
While many have been critical of United’s new £75million signing, most the evidence suggests he possesses everything needed to be a success at Old Trafford.
