Pep Guardiola is planning to unleash a 2-3-5 formation on the Premier League next season.
That can be the only explanation for pursuing yet another forward in the transfer market, with the City boss going all out to sign Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund.
The 20-year-old winger dined out with Guardiola in Manchester while on holiday, according to Le 10 Sport.
Whether Dortmund approved is unknown, as is what the pair ate.
But if we were betting men we’d say Guardiola had steak tartare while Dembele went for French onion soup. Just a hunch.
Back to footballing matters.
Dembele has been a runaway hit since joining Dortmund from Rennes last summer.
As well as scoring ten goals in all competitions he contributed 12 assists, confirming his status as one of the most dangerous wingers in world football.
England got a close look at Dembele as he ran riot with Kylian Mbappe, scoring his first goal for the French national team.
But any move for Dembele would pose questions about how Guardiola plans to fit all his attackers into one side.
City can already call upon Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne out wide, while Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus will be providing the firepower up front next season.
Maybe Pep’s just going to get rid of defenders altogether. Whatever happens, it should be exciting.
