The well-worn path from Southampton to Liverpool in the summer transfer window might have taken a slight diversion along the M62.
Manchester City have reportedly tabled a whopping £50million bid for Saints defender Virgil Van Dijk.
Pep Guardiola will £180,000-a-week to the Dutchman, who has excelled in the Saints defence since his move from Celtic in 2015.
The Times report the five-year-deal will be four times his current salary at St Mary’s, and he will join fellow summer signings Ederson and Bernardo Silva.
Van Dijk has been out of action since January after picking up a foot ligament injury, but has been one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League over the past two seasons.
It is thought Pep Guardiola wants Van Dijk to play alongside John Stones in City’s rocky defence.
As a ball-playing centre-back, Van Dijk seems the perfect fit for Pep Guardiola, and the Dutchman has also been on occasional free-kick duty for the Citizens.
Man’s gotta dream.
