Wikipedia knows more about football than you do, just face it.
That unheard of 15-year-old player who’s just been included in the first-team? Wikipedia already has 1500 words on his birth, early life and career to date.
But there was a blip in the matrix this weekend, when PSG included 23-year-old Gaetan Robail in their first-team squad ahead of the 5-0 win against Saint-Etienne.
Now, as all, ahem, knowledgeable journalists do when they see a name they’re unfamiliar with, the first thing we did was fire up Wikipedia.
But Robail was nowhere to be seen, despite hardly being a bolt from the blue wonderkid.
So who is this mysterious 23-year-old rubbing shoulders with Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria and Marco Verratti?
Robail was born in Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise in northern France on 9 January 1994, a day after Chaka Demus and Pliers stormed to no.1 in the charts with Twist & Shout.
The midfielder arrived at the Parc des Princes under the radar last July when he signed from Arras, who play their football in the fourth tier of French football.
Robail had impressed in the Championnat de France Amateur, scoring 14 goals in the two seasons prior to moving.
He was initially signed to play for PSG’s reserve side, who also play their football in the CFA, along with the likes of Rennes, Lorient and Nantes’ second teams.
But after eight goals in 16 starts this season he’s now made the step up to Unai Emery’s senior squad, competing with seasoned internationals.
In an age where nothing is a surprise in football, the rise of a player like Robail, from amateur football to one of Europe’s biggest clubs, is enough to give us all hopes.
Where are our Copa Mundials? We’ve got some training to do.
