They will be back in the Champions League next season and Wenger believes they face a battle to defend the trophy.

Wenger said: “I congratulate Chelsea on what they’ve done but when they play in Europe it’ll be a different story.

“They’ve done well but in the last two seasons, with Leicester and Chelsea, the team that won the league hasn’t played in Europe.

“It will be a different season because they will have to play on Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday but, look, I don’t know what will happen next season.

“Chelsea have been extremely good and have won the championship but they won it two seasons ago too and it just shows you they have exceptional quality.

“In Spain, Real Madrid can win games by playing at a lower percentage of the maximum. They are maybe better than us.

“Bayern are similar, they dominate the German championship in an easy way.”

Wenger claims their humiliating 10-2 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League hit their form.

He added: “We struggled after what happened against Bayern but it was still possible to come back at Chelsea.”
