Fans left speechless after Giorgio Chiellini’s greatest ever act of defending

Juventus' experienced centre-back somehow managed to divert a cross out for a corner when it looked as if Monaco were certain to score

Giorgio Chiellini has forgotten more about defending than most of us will ever know.

The experienced Juventus defender has been responsible for some the most comprehensive man-marking jobs in recent history.

After the 33-year-old nullified the threat of Luis Suarez against Barcelona in the quarter-finals some pondered if he was getting actually better with age.

And perhaps they were right.

In Juventus’ Champions League semi-final second leg against Monaco, Chiellini produced one of the most impressive acts of defending ever witnessed.

Late in the first half, Benjamin Mendy fired a dangerous cross across the face of Gigi Buffon’s goal.

With Radamel Falcao waiting behind him, Chiellini’s only option was to deflect the ball away from his own goal.

Facing the centre of his own goal, and just three yards out, he somehow managed to divert the cross wide of the far post and out for a corner.

You could tell from Buffon’s reaction that it was a special piece of defending from one of the game’s very best.

Fans at home could barely believe their eyes…

In many ways it was more beautiful than a goal.

We shouldn’t have expected anything else from a man who loves defending more than life itself.

Anyone else fancy Juventus to lift the trophy all of a sudden?
