He really is magic.
At times this season you would have been forgiven for forgetting the talent Cesc Fabregas possesses.
Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 formation has hinged on the defensive qualities of N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic in centre midfield.
This has meant that Fabregas has been restricted to cameo appearances for long spells of the campaign.
Despite reduced playing time, the 30-year-old has provided ten assists in the league this term, more than any other Chelsea player.
Not only that, in reaching double figures he has become the first player in history to do so in six different Premier League seasons.
The landmark moment came as the Blues relegated Middlesbrough with a comfortable 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Diego Costa opened the scoring after 23 minutes when Fabregas curled a perfectly weighted ball in behind Boro’s defence for Chelsea’s top scorer to collect before sliding his finish though Brad Guzan’s legs.
The pass took a flick of Fabio on the way through, which is enough to take the assist off Fabregas in the eyes of the Premier League, but the Blues’ creator-in-chief was not to be denied…
In the second half he assisted Matic’s first goal at Stamford Bridge with a trademark outside-of-the-boot chip between defenders.
There’s no way the busy statisticians are going to take that one off him.
Only Ryan Giggs (162) has more assists in Premier League history than Fabregas (105) but even the legendary Man United midfielder never managed six seasons of ten or more assists.
Fabregas also brought up his century of assists quicker than Giggs and the only two other players to hit triple figures; Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard.
Rumours of Fabregas’ exit from Stamford Bridge persist with both Milan clubs reportedly interested but if Conte decided to hang on to the veteran of over 100 Spain caps, you fancy the fans would be delighted.
All together now: “Fabregas is magic…”
