Andres Iniesta phoned Real Madrid players after Barcelona subbed FIFA’s ‘The Best’ Awards
Andres Iniesta is a wonderful human being.
Not only is he one of the greatest midfielders in the world and of all time, he’s also a bloody good bloke.
The 32-year-old playmaker reportedly phoned his Real Madrid counterparts after the FIFA’s ‘The Best’ Awards ceremony to apologise for his absence.
Barcelona players swerved the ceremony claiming the trip to Zurich would have disrupted their preparation for Wednesday’s Copa del Rey second-leg against Athletic Bilbao.
Being the class act that he is, Iniesta took it upon himself to call some of the Madrid players honoured on the night and apologise and give to give a reason for the snub.
One different to that peddled by Barca.
Marca claim that Iniesta revealed that the decision to stay in Catalonia had nothing to do with the players and was due to ‘differences’ inside Barca’s hierarchy.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the esteemed Best Player Award, couldn’t resist mentioning Lionel Messi’s absence on the night.
“I would have liked it ifMessi were here, as well as the rest of the Barcelona players,” he said with a wry smile.
“But they have a cup game, so it’s perfectly understandable.”
Rumours in Spain suggest the Madrid board feel disrespected by their Clasico rivals, fuelling an already bitter and tense relationship between the two clubs.
Five Madrid players were included in FIFA’s Team of the Year (Ronaldo, Modric, Kroos, Marcelo, Ramos) compared to just four Barcelona players (Messi, Suarez, Pique, Iniesta).
If only everyone was like Iniesta, then we could all just get along in peace.
Although, that does sound quite boring.
