Fishing is the new meta when it comes to RPG games.
If you have played Far Cry 5, Monster Hunter Worlds, The Legend of Zelda or any other game where you have the option to fish you will know the simple pleasure of patiently staking out a spot, setting up camp and reeling in a trophy fish.
It can be both rewarding and challenging, with players exclaiming online how they often prefer the fishing to the main storyline!
We recently spoke to Mark Greenway, Business Director at Dove Tail Games and avid angler about their upcoming fishing title, ‘Fishing Sim World’.
Having previously released their other titles as PC exclusives, Mark explained how with the release of Fishing Sim World on the console they were broaching the barrier between their core ‘angler’ fan base and more casual gamers, saying:
“We wanted to be in a situation where you can fish at any point and at any time” Mark continued adding:
“You can get a group of friends together on their consoles (with up to four-person multiplayer) you will all get a boat and you can all fish in one spot together, or you can take it more seriously and fish in different parts of the lake and try and turn it into a competition.”
Mark added, “or you can use the boats to race each other around the lakes, which is going to be just as much fun as the fishing, to be honest!”
A lot of gamers can be dissuaded by a game that’s sole focus is fishing, preferring to ‘tackle’ games like Far Cry 5 that also have a storyline with fishing being only a small additional activity you can choose to do.
“At its heart, it’s about fishing, we have kept it at its core level a fishing simulator,” Mark said:
“Saying that I do think it’s accessible to everyone, everybody knows something about fishing especially with all of the shows now on mainstream TV! It’s definetly accessible to everybody at the end of the day.”
One of the best features of Fishing Sim World and the one that will see players staying engaged and wanting to improve their skills are the Tournaments.
“So there are four different tournaments in this game the Bass Tour, the Predator Tour, the Carpe Tour and the Mac Series,” Mark said.
- The Bass Tour is about getting the five biggest fish you can catch in a certain period of time
- The Predator Tour is about the length of fish combined, so a 14-inch pike with a 16-inch pike makes 30-inches in total
- The Carpe Tour is about how much weight all your fish make totalled up
- The Mac series is about catching as many fish as you can in a set time
Mark continued saying, “Each one of the tournaments is different and each one will run for a week, we are gonna have them running all the time and at the end of each month we will give out an angler of the month trophy with in-game rewards.”
With games like Fortnite, FIFA and Call of Duty paving the way into the mainstream for esports, competitive gaming is hotter now than ever.
Mark agreed, saying:
“There’s plenty of opportunity for that. People love competition and they love to fish. I have found when I’m fishing on my own I’m practising for when I am going fishing with my friends.”
If you have ever enjoyed fishing as part of a larger RPG title or in real life then it will definitely be worth checking out this game when it comes out.
Fishing Sim World is out 18th September on PC, Xbox One and PS4 and you can check out the trailer below.
