The importance of a good rotation
In my previous article, I covered the top three best locations to land in Fortnite and why.
So we’ve taught you where to land, you have got your first kill(s), your first bit of loot, some material… now what?
Now is when you need to think about your map ‘rotation,’ it’s a constant consideration which you may or may not know you are already doing in order to give you a better chance at obtaining victory.
In Lehman’s terms map rotation pretty much is “where I go next” but with a bit more consideration.
There is one question you need to ask yourself which you need to answer and this will give you direction:
Do I want more kills?
If the answer is yes then your map rotation should be towards the edge of the circle that has the biggest amount of space between the storm.
This area has now become no man’s land with all the players scrambling to get into the safe zone along with the ‘cool guys’ who are purposely hanging around to get kills for themselves.
If you position yourself just shy (inside) of the safe zone you can strategically pick up a few kills to gain extra loot and material.
For example, if the safe zone has appeared South-West over Paradise Palms and ends just covering Dusty Divot, you know for a fact there are players from Tilted Towers that need to make it in.
Often players making the break to get the storm leave themselves vulnerable.
Are you battle ready?
If you don’t feel you have the right guns in your inventory or the number of materials and you need to stock up then my best advice is to try and head to the unnamed locations around the circumference of your side of the circle (preferably on the side of the circle with the shortest distance to the circle).
After the first 2/3 minutes you can be sure that most of the main named locations will have been stripped bare, and let’s be honest these places never offer great material options. However, I would say getting battle ready should carry the same tempo as hunting for kills – it won’t be long before you’re found and for me, there is nothing better than finding someone with their back to me chopping a tree.
To be honest, my thoughts for this actually start during the bus ride because your original landing position has the greatest effect on where your map rotation can realistically go.
I quite like a landing at Lazy Links but if you look around Lazy, you either have a hard slog west to Pleasant Park or the same distance east to Tomato Town with not much in between. Whereas if you land at the Soccer field you can loot quickly and head to Viking Ship, Pleasant Park, Greasy Grove, Shifty Shafts or Tilted Towers.
Don’t forget Epic’s best present to Fortnite fans yet – use them whilst you still can this season!
Find, learn and memorise where the rifts are on the map – EPIC have introduced the most fun and useful addition to the game since the hunting rifle. The rifts can get you across half the map faster than any storm, and if you are aware of their locations you can even jump straight from one into another.
For a helping hand, here is a map showing all the rift locations.
I can get from Lucky Landing to Lonely Lodge in no time at all.
Plus, an added bonus is getting the jump on someone during your travels – no one looks in the air and most players aren’t paying attention to their sound surroundings – by the time they’ve noticed you’re there, you’re already half an SMG clip down with an addition to your kill count.
Good luck, and when you’re successfully gliding across the plains of Fortnite – don’t forget to give me a wave.
