Lionel Messi, globally recognised as one of the greatest footballers to set foot on the pitch, didn’t have the greatest luck at this World Cup.
The Argentinian team drew with Iceland, lost 3-0 to Croatia, and narrowly beat Nigeria.
But they were ultimately eliminated from the tournament by France 4-3.

However, it could have been so different for Messi.
The Barcelona maestro has dual-citizenship with Spain and Argentina – meaning he’s eligiabe to play for either.
The former is, without doubt, a strong team – so what would happen?
YouTuber BMOnus has the answer.
Using the new World Cup mode in FIFA 2018, BMOnus recreated Messi with the same stats, age and traits but, as part of the Spanish World Cup team.
Here’s what happened.
Spain’s first matchup was against Saudi Arabia, with Messi scoring in the first minutes of the game (so off to a good start).
Messi went on to score another goal, leading the team to a 5-0 victory.
This compared to Argentinas first game against Iceland is a ‘slight’ improvement to say the least.
Spain went onto to beat Ireland, Cameroon and South Africa, with Messi netting three more goals.
A resounding victory against Italy put Spain in the World Cup Final. to face off with Belgium.
Neither team could get the upper hand and the game went into extra time resulting in a penalty shootout.
Belgium took the trophy home halting the newly improved Spanish team’s chances of a World Cup trophy.
Had Messi chosen to play for Spain, the team may have made it to the World Cup Final… I guess we will never know.
