EA Sports recently released the World Cup mode for players to enjoy alongside the football festivities in Russia.
A number of players, however, have commented how different the gameplay in this mode seems to be from standard Ultimate Team.
Players have taken to the FIFA sub-Reddit and even the forums of EA sports website, to vent their frustrations and complain about the change in game-mechanics, which – they claim, is preventing them from winning.
The complaints centre around gameplay being slower, shooting being off and a general feel that the mode is too ‘arcadey’ (whatever that means).
Well, if you were one of the few blaming your losses on the new gameplay mechanics, nothing has changed in the new mode.
Eurogamer spoke with Andrei Lazarescu, producer of the World Cup update, who explained two reasons why players may feel as though there is a difference.
A Fresh Start
The players on the national team that you pick in the World Cup mode will have fresh stats. It is very likely that many of the players will be worse than those on your ultimate team that you have developed over the past year.
Overall, this gives the mode a slowed down tempo to gameplay.
It’s mental, mate
The second reason Lazarescu mentioned was psychological.
The World Cup mode bought with it a whole new look, new stadiums, new lights, new kits, totally new players and a revamped user interface.
He said “Players saw it and thought, oh, this is new, and psychologically it feels like new gameplay.”
No more blaming the new gameplay when you lose 4-0 to Tunisia now!
