FIFA 18 fans have been treated to a number of new faces – as EA battles to keep its game up to date.
Neymar, David Silva and Raheem Sterling are but a few star names who have had a makeover.
Neymar now boasts lines in the side of his hair, while Silva – who shaved his hair at the start of the season, is now – pretty much – bald.
Sterling’s face looks much more lifelike, too.
However, fans were quick to point out the update does not automatically update faces on existing Career Mode saves.
One fan gamer wrote: “The faces don’t update on an existing career mode save, so you’d be stuck with head-of-hair David Silva and that s****y excuse for a face Raheem Sterling has had in the game for the last couple of years.”
Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany – who, according to EA’s facial scanning team, is ‘far and away’ the most realistic looking player in series.
For the past few years, EA has used facial scanning to ensure in-game characters look just like their real-life counterparts.
The scanning team travel to different clubs, most recently Forest Green Rovers, to scan player faces before importing them into the game. But every year it’s Kompany that looks the best.
“Vincent Kompany is going to have the most detail now because he’s been scanned so many times,” said Jack Hoyle, a freelance camera operator who works for EA facial scanning team.
“This is because he’s the player we use for any tests – so every time there’s a software update for the graphics, Kompany gets the first batch test on him.
“So, he actually gets an updated character every year – meaning he’ll be far and away the best quality.
“Any time there’s an update done in Vancouver that then gets sent over to me – the example is always Vincent Kompany.”
Maybe next year it should be Sterling.
