There’s nothing worse than playing an opponent who always shields the ball in FIFA 17.
Most of the time, it renders your defender utterly useless – with a foul the only way to win back possession.
So, what is the best way to counter those who shield the ball?
Turns out there a two theories, which made their way on to the FIFA sub-Reddit – a passive and aggressive option.
The passive approach involves backing off immediately and narrowing options for the player to pass to.
As one player explains: “Counter it by not closing down for ex just blocking passing lanes. Not like they gonna run thru your whole defence in milliseconds.”
Another added: “When they shield, just back off completely. Don’t get sucked into it. This way you can just intercept the pass.”
The other school of thought requires the more aggressive approach of bullying the player off the ball. However, this should only be tried with stronger players.
One gamer writes: “When defending this (shielding), use L2 to jockey and hold down circle to muscle them off and pull at them. Sometimes it will be a foul but strong players with 85+ strength will generally just win the ball.
“Also L2 teammate contain tends to work well against people shielding.”
Now, go forth and conquer.
