Gabriel Jesus lays down the gauntlet to his Dream Team rivals with 22-point haul

A moment of silence for the handful of Dream Team gaffers who rashly transferred Gabriel Jesus (£5m) out of their team after Game Week 1.

Arsenal’s new No9 threw down the gauntlet to his rivals on Saturday when he inspired his side to a 4-2 win over Leicester.

Fans at the Emirates were left enthralled by the Brazilian as he scored twice and then assisted goals for Granit Xhaka (£2m) and Gabriel Martinelli (£2.8m).

He opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a beautifully precise finish into the top corner from an acute angle.

12 minutes later he was presented with a far simpler task as Jamie Vardy’s (£4.5m) attempted headed clearance fell to Jesus to nod home at the back post from a yard out.

In the second half, he pounced on a mistake from Danny Ward (£1.9m), more on him soon, to gift Xhaka a simple tap-in before assisting Martinelli as his compatriot found the bottom corner with his left foot from just outside the box.

Having played a part in all four of the Gunners’ goals, Jesus naturally claimed the Star Man award when all was said and done to bank 22 points, the biggest haul of the season so far at this early stage.

Prior to Game Week 1, the 25-year-old appeared in just over 53% of teams but his ownership dropped ever so slightly to 49.7% before the Foxes’ visit to north London.

It goes without saying that those who let their impatience get the better of them have been severely punished – Jesus is now Dream Team’s overall top points scorer.

It wasn’t even as if he disappointed against Crystal Palace, he looked particularly lively in the first half and earned three points for a match rating of 7.2.

And gaffers can reasonably expect more healthy returns before the international break given Arsenal’s friendly fixtures.

Mikel Arteta’s side face Bournemouth, Fulham, Aston Villa, Man United, Everton and Brentford before the end of September.

In years gone by, the Red Devils would stick out from that list as a potentially problematic match-up but on current form a trip to Old Trafford is about as favourable as fixtures come.

Arsenal were crying out for a productive No9 last season and early signs suggest they’ve emphatically solved that problem through Jesus.

At £5m he’s considerably cheaper than the likes of Erling Haaland (£7.3m), Harry Kane (£7.4m) and Mohamed Salah (£7.6m) but he may well prove himself capable of matching the mountainous points totals expected of those premium forwards.

Gaffers, put your faith in Jesus.
