Imagine an alternate universe in which the Premier League is decided on Dream Team points… joyous, isn’t it?
Since it’s still technically the international break, we took some time to work out which team has produced the most points so far this season.
To add relevance we mirrored the mechanics of the game by only including the best possible XI (those with the most points) in one of the Dream Team eligible formations.
Without further ado, here’s the podium…
BRONZE MEDAL: CHELSEA
The Blues comfortably boast the best defence with Edouard Mendy (£4.3m) leading the way between the sticks and Cesar Azpilicueta (£4.8m) just edging out Joao Cancelo (£5.2m) at the top of the defenders’ rankings.
Half of the six defenders with 40+ points at this stage play under Thomas Tuchel and Thiago Silva (£3.7m) is just one clean sheet away from joining his team-mates in the exclusive group.
However, Chelsea’s midfielders haven’t set Dream Team alight yet this term with their three best – Mateo Kovacic (£2.3m), Mason Mount (£4.1m) and Jorginho (£2.5m) – mustering just 49 points between, the same tally as Bruno Fernandes (£6.3m) has achieved solo.
Romelu Lukaku (£6.0m) has provided a healthy 45 points but Timo Werner (£3.5m) and Kai Havertz (£3.3m) haven’t offered much in support, the latter is stuck on a measly eight points at this stage.
TOTAL POINTS OF BEST XI: 323
SILVER MEDAL: MAN CITY
The aforementioned Cancelo and Ruben Dias (£4.6m) have picked up where they left off last season and have amassed 90 points between them after seven Game Weeks – a superb joint-effort.
The Portuguese pair have been ably supported by Kyle Walker (£4.0m) and Aymeric Laporte (£3.8m) but still City’s defensive contingent can’t quite keep up with Chelsea’s.
It’s a completely different story in midfield, a position City have dominated in Dream Team in recent seasons – they had three representatives in the top four last term.
Between Jack Grealish’s (£4.6m) steady returns, Riyad Mahrez’s (£5.4m) midweek spurges and an early flurry of false nine offerings from Ferran Torres (£3.7m), the Citizens are once again leading the way in terms of midfield points – this trio have combined for 106.
Up top, Gabriel Jesus (£4.4m) is the only categorised forward Man City have in Dream Team this season and the Brazilian has delivered for those brave enough to back him with 45 points.
To make up the numbers, we included the next-best midfielders Bernardo Silva (£2.7m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£5.7m) – if the latter gets going then City may well claim gold…
TOTAL POINTS OF BEST XI: 371
GOLD MEDAL: LIVERPOOL
We are reluctant to call this a ‘one-man team’ but the difference between the Reds and City when it comes to Dream Team points so far is the irrepressible Mohamed Salah (£7.3m).
The 65.4%-owned forward is by far and away the leading points scorer overall with 89 to his name – he’s averaging 9.9 points per fixture!
Add in Sadio Mane (£5.6m) and Diogo Jota’s (£4.2m) combined 75 points and Jurgen Klopp’s strike force is in a whole bracket of their own.
Curtis Jones (£2.5m) can take some credit for this victory too, he’s come from nowhere to deliver 25 points in rapid time to rescue Liverpool’s midfield.
Virgil van Dijk’s (£5.3m) return has restored normality in defence where Kostas Tsimikas can stake a claim for Dream Team’s surprise package of the season having stacked up 35 points while deputising for Andy Robertson (£3.8m).
