What can we learn about the climax of the season from the Premier League form table?

Form is temporary, class is permanent.

That much-recycled adage may be true but in the world of Dream Team, form is vitally important.

Take Sergio Aguero (£4.1m) for example, few would doubt the permanence of his class but he has no form to speak of – for various reasons – which is why he’s mustered just 18 points in what will be his final season with Man City.

The form of individual players is crucial but perhaps we should also consider the form of the eligible clubs when devising our strategies, particularly with the season heading for a dramatic conclusion.

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the Premier League form table (last five games)…

  1. Man United: 4 wins, 1 draw, 0 losses – 13 points
  2. West Ham: 3 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss – 10 points
  3. Chelsea: 3 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss – 10 points
  4. Leeds: 3 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss – 10 points
  5. Man City:  3 wins, 0 draws, 2 losses – 9 points
  6. Liverpool: 3 wins, 0 draws, 2 losses – 9 points
  7. Arsenal: 2 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss – 8 points
  8. Spurs: 2 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses – 7 points
  9. West Brom: 2 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses – 7 points
  10. Leicester: 2 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses – 7 points
  11. Brighton: 2 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses – 7 points
  12. Southampton: 2 wins, 0 draws, 3 losses – 6 points
  13. Newcastle: 1 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss – 6 points
  14. Aston Villa: 1 win, 2 draws, 2 losses – 5 points
  15. Burnley: 1 win, 2 draws, 2 losses – 5 points
  16. Everton: 1 win, 2 draws, 2 losses – 5 points
  17. Crystal Palace: 1 win, 2 draws, 2 losses – 5 points
  18. Wolves: 1 win, 1 draw, 3 losses – 4 points
  19. Fulham: 1 win, 0 draws, 4 losses – 3 points
  20. Sheffield United: 1 win, 0 draws, 4 losses – 3 points

The form table suggest West Ham are in a great position to join the Manchester clubs in the Champions League spots if they can maintain their current efforts.

It’s worrying reading for Leicester fans – who will be dreading a second successive failure to make top four after last season’s collapse – with Chelsea heaping the pressure on.

Three wins a row have propelled Leeds above Man City, whose defeats can possibly be put down to the fact the title is virtually already in the trophy cabinet.

Everton and Aston Villa players have been popular with Dream Team gaffers at times this season but returns have dried up in recent weeks — Jack Grealish’s (£4.5m) absence has been notable.

Dream Team points are scored in Europe and both domestic cups too so league form isn’t a definitive guide but if you place value in momentum then the likes of Jesse Lingard (£3.3m), Harry Maguire (£5.4m) and Mason Mount (£3.8m) look set fair.
