TALK OF THE TOON

Callum Wilson is on the brink of joining the 100 Club™ with an ownership of just 0.9%

You would be forgiven for avoiding Newcastle games this season.

Flashes of endeavour in their last three games have provided some entertainment but a lack of adventure has blighted much of their season, to the widespread annoyance of their fans.

But it’s not all doom and gloom at St James’ Park.

Allan Saint-Maximin (£2.7m) is one of the most entertaining players in the league when fully fit and in Callum Wilson (£2.8m) they have a predatory centre-forward who is pulling his weight and then some.

The 28-year-old has scored ten league goals this season having signed from Bournemouth in the summer following the Cherries’ relegation.

The fact Wilson is outscoring the likes of Marcus Rashford (£4.8m), Raheem Sterling (£6.5m) and Sadio Mane (£6.2m) in the Premier League is even more impressive when you consider how low Newcastle rank in a number of attacking metrics.

A glance at stats relating to chances created, passes into the box, and similar measures of creativity make for grim reading if you support the Toon.

While that needs to be addressed, it also means we should heap praise on Wilson for reaching ten goals in 20 appearances — he is making the absolute most of his service.

And he will be encouraged by the approach of his side in recent outings against Leeds, Everton and Crystal Palace.

Newcastle suffered defeats in two of those games but they played well enough to suggest they were a little unlucky — they registered more shots than both Leeds and Palace but failed to convert sustained pressure into goals.

A more ambitious Newcastle plus a firing Wilson is a combination with potential — not least from a Dream Team standpoint.

The England international moved onto 89 points after taking 20 from Game Week 19.

He has more points than Alexandre Lacazette (£3.7m), Anthony Martial (£3.7m) and Gabriel Jesus (£3.9m) with an ownership of just 0.9%.

No player from any position with an ownership below 1% has more points than Wilson, making him temporary king of the differentials.

Truth be told, transferring Wilson into your Dream Team comes with drawbacks.

Aside from the aforementioned stats regarding Newcastle’s creativity – which has the potential to stifle Wilson’s goal returns – there’s the fact that European football recommences this month.

Generally, you’re better off backing players eligible to play in as many games as possible, but it’s always worth mentioning a player with such a low ownership when they start outperforming some of the big boys.

Wilson could be a great option for any Draft gaffers looking for a change in personnel up top.

Newcastle play an injury-hit Southampton this weekend with Jan Bednarek and co fresh off a 9-0 thrashing at the hands of Man United — Wilson surely couldn’t ask for a better fixture if he’s to add to his goal tally?
