Dream Team gaffers will be ditching Timo Werner in their thousands this month

Andriy Shevchenko, Fernando Torres, Alvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuain… Timo Werner (£4.2m)?

After an impressive start to life as a Chelsea player, the German international’s form has dipped to the point he was tackled by a corner flag during the Blues’ defeat to Man City on Sunday.

Frank Lampard has asked the 24-year-old to play through the middle and as a wide forward this season, with varying degrees of success.

Werner has looked increasingly lost in recent weeks and is almost unrecognisable from the dynamic threat who spearheaded RB Leipzig’s entertaining attacking unit.

It’s certainly too soon to worry about a critical, permanent devolution similar to the one Torres suffered while swapping Anfield for Stamford Bridge.

So while Werner will probably be allowed a full season to bed in before serious questions will be asked within the club, Dream Team bosses can’t afford to be quite so patient.

Lean spell

Lean spell

Werner has taken just five points from his last seven games, blanking in six of those fixtures.

His lean spell has aligned with Chelsea’s downturn in form that has seen Lampard’s men lose four of their last six league games, dropping to 8th as a result.

It’s a testament to Werner’s encouraging start to the season that he is one of only ten players to reach the 100-point mark in Dream Team 2020/21 but his current form cannot be ignored.

He remains the third-most popular forward with an ownership of 26.1% but choosing a replacement is not a simple task.

At £4.2m, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the only forward of an equivalent value at the time of writing and his form isn’t that much better than Werner’s over the last month.

Other possible replacements include Patrick Bamford (£3.6m), Roberto Firmino (£3.3m) and Ollie Watkins (£3.1m) but all three carry caveats.

Certainly swapping a forward of Werner’s ability for a striker who played in the Championship last season would require a big leap of faith.

So while there may not be an easy solution to the Werner problem, to deny its existence would be foolish.

With that being said, Chelsea’s next two fixtures are against Morecambe and Fulham which could provide relief for the German.

Healthy returns in those games (if he’s even selected) may boost his price, which would open up more potential replacements.
