MAGIC OF THE CUP

Here are our vital FA Cup and Premier League tips for January

We’ve been smothered unceremoniously by Premier League action in recent weeks.

But this weekend the FA Cup returns – and poses some intriguing questions for your Dream Team.

Who on Earth is actually going to play? Are Premier League teams even that bothered? Does the ‘magic of the cup’ even exist anymore?

This weekend:

The FA Cup is a bit of minefield so we’re backing some of the second string to make an impression.

Sergio Romero will surely deputise for David De Gea with Manchester United entertaining Reading in the early kick off on Saturday.

The Royals were statistically the second worst club in England in 2018, so we can’t see them derailing the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revolution.

In defence Diego Dalot could shine, whilst Emerson Palmeiri will also surely come in for Chelsea against Nottingham Forest.

Further forward, Michael Antonio has been in good form off the bench for West Ham so could start against Birmingham.

And Gabriel Jesus is a dead cert given Manchester City host Rotherham and Sergio Aguero is due a rest.

January:

Yesterday we profiled the top six clubs and their respective fixtures across January and realised City, Tottenham and Chelsea all play six times.

That’s at least twice more than the rest of the Premier League.

With that in mind, the law of averages suggests picking players from those three clubs makes more sense than the rest.

Heung-min Son is in sensational form but is jetting off to represent South Korea in the Asian Cup in a couple of weeks.

Instead look to Christian Eriksen, who has racked up 30 points in his last four appearances for Spurs.

From City we recommend Leroy Sane and Danilo, the latter a decent differential option who is currently being preferred to the error-prone Kyle Walker.

And from Chelsea David Luiz has really picked up of late, registering both clean sheets and assists for the Blues.

Finally, we can’t ignore the momentum being built by Solskjaer at Old Trafford and Paul Pogba’s renaissance.

Pogba was the top scoring player over the festive period with an incredible 48 points and looks like a must have now that he has a manager who trusts him.

Turns out he is quite a handy player after all…
