Two goals at opposite ends of an entertaining game meant the spoils were shared between Southampton and Arsenal.
But the Gunners will feel it was two points dropped in their pursuit of a top-four spot.
Charlie Austin opened the scoring inside three minutes at St Mary’s, capitalising on poor play from Per Mertesacker and firing past Petr Cech.
And after weathering an early storm from the hosts, Arsenal eventually took control of the game.
But it took substitute Olivier Giroud’s late equaliser to spare their embarrassment, heading home Alexis Sanchez’s inviting cross.
One of the more peculiar moments in an entertaining match came late in the second half when Cech was forced into a moment of improvisation.
With James Ward-Prowse running onto a long ball, the Arsenal goalkeeper was forced to use his head – and managed to reach the halfway line with his clearance.
That’s a head made of steel.
