Manchester United fans and fantasy football players alike have been dealt a damaging blow this week.
Paul Pogba limped off in United’s 3-0 Champions League win over Basel and was spotted leaving Old Trafford on crutches.
And it’s now been confirmed the French midfielder could miss up to six weeks of action with a hamstring injury.
Pogba is now set to be sidelined for as many as six matches, including the huge clash with Liverpool at Anfield on October 14.
The news leaves nearly 35% of Dream Team managers with a big dilemma – who to replace Pogba with on a short-term basis.
The former Juventus midfielder has been in fine form so far this season, racking up two goals and two assists and 25 Dream Team points in the process.
Pogba's Dream Team stats
- 25 points so far
- 2 goals and 2 assists in all competitions
- Third most selected player this season (34.4%)
- WhoScored rating of 8.09 – highest in Premier League
He’s going to be a real miss, but like anyone can be replaced and he has plenty of able deputies waiting in the wings.
Here’s five players who could prove perfect alternatives…
1 Christian Eriksen (£6.3m)
Eriksen is getting better and better every season in England and is turning into one of the best creative midfielders in Europe.
The stats don’t lie ultimately, and after another virtuoso display in Tottenham’s win over Borussia Dortmund the Dane has now recorded seven more assists than any other player so far in 2017.
Eriksen has 27 points so far this season and Spurs have a kind fixture list, taking on Swansea, West Ham and Huddersfield in their next three games.
2 Kevin De Bruyne (£5.8m)
De Bruyne has really found his groove in the last week and was at his instrumental best as Manchester City demolished Liverpool last weekend.
When the Belgian schemer is in the mood there a few players who are more clinical in the Premier League, exemplified by two fantastic assists against the Reds.
City take on Watford and Crystal Palace in their next two games so expect De Bruyne to continue to rack up big points.
3 Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£4.8m)
If Mkhitaryan continues at his current assist rate in the Premier League he’ll finish the season with 48 assists.
The Armenian has been fantastic so far, creating five goals for his team-mates in just four games as Manchester United sit pretty at the Premier League’s summit.
He’s also a much cheaper option – at £4.8m – so a straight swap for Pogba would free up funds to improve your Dream Team elsewhere.
4 Dele Alli (£6m)
Alli is a goalscoring phenomenon, with no midfielder scoring more across Europe’s top five leagues last season.
And the England man is showing no signs of relenting this season already having scored in two of Spurs’ three opening Premier League games.
As with Eriksen, Alli faces a favourable run of league fixtures so could make an ideal Pogba alternative.
5 Philippe Coutinho (£6m)
A left-field option yes, but Coutinho is slowly being reintroduced into the Liverpool side after his dream move to Barcelona collapsed in the summer.
The little Brazilian is the Reds’ best player on his day and both a goal and assist threat after notching 21 combined last season.
He made his comeback against Sevilla on Wednesday night and should be a regular starter for Liverpool in the coming weeks.
Alvaro Morata or Alexandre Lacazette? Why not both in this weekend’s big game?
