It was supposed to be the biggest occasion of their lives.
But the Burton Albion fans who missed the kick off because of traffic chaos thought they had missed the whole game when they arrived.
The M6 was closed both ways prior to the match meaning thousands of Burton fans were delayed and when they finally made, they found a near-empty Etihad stadium.
Unofficial Burton insider Lee Satchell said as it was a major semi-final the Burton fans were expecting a ferocious atmosphere inside the Etihad despite the gap between the two teams.
However many thought they had missed the game completely as they entered the stadium to find thousands of empty seats.
Satchell said the fans could make out loads of plastic cut outs in the home end and that’s when they realised why it was so quiet inside.
Many of the players said that they were sure their tiny home stadium would be a much scarier place for the City players to come.
According to Satchell it was so quiet the Burton players could chat to the Burton fans in the stands that had managed to make it to the stadium despite the traffic chaos.
Satchell said, “The players were worried about what the atmosphere would be like but as soon as they remembered all the City fans were plastics and wouldn’t be there it was a weight lifted off their shoulders.”
