Eric Dier flew home early to be knighted by the Queen following England’s rousing 3-2 win over Spain.
The Queen was supposed to take up media responsibilities relating to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s pregnancy.
However those were set aside after the Queen saw Dier’s tackle on Sergio Ramos and insisted on knighting the Spurs midfielder.
Lee Satchell, unofficial royal spokesman, explained: “Lizzy was on the phone talking to the press about Meghan and Harry’s baby announcement, and how she hoped it would be named Gareth.
“She had the football in the background, as she always does. Honestly, the Queen will watch anything. She had Halifax v Chesterfield on over the weekend.
“So she’s sitting there, half paying attention, half not. She was a bit concerned about our switch from a back three to a back four, so she was more nervous than usual.
“All of a sudden, Dier has absolutely gone through Ramos. Cut him in half. Boom.
“The Queen was off her seat. She pulled the phone out of the socket by accident. She screamed so loud Prince Philip, who was watching The Sopranos in the other room, came through to see what all the fuss was about.
“Next thing you know she’s on the phone to Gareth, demanding Eric come home immediately to be knighted.
“Sir Eric Jeremy Edgar Dier. It’s got a lovely ring to it.”
