Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang undergoes extra back tests in medical to ensure he can carry entire Arsenal team

"A lot is expected of the new striker, but ensuring his lumbar is rock solid is the key thing," a source said

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had to undergo extra back tests during his medical to ensure he was ready and able to carry the Arsenal team for the next years, it has been claimed.

The Gabonese striker was reportedly subjected to intensive lumbar examinations before the Gunners could confirm his signing on Wednesday.

Unofficial medical assistant Lee Satchell said it was important to ensure Aubameyang’s lower back could handle three years of strenuous team-carrying.

He added: “After the usual medical processes, we had to spend a good three hours making sure Pierre-Emerick knew what he was letting his back in for.

“He’s had experience of similar team-carrying at Dortmund in the past few years, aside from last season when Ousmane Dembele lifted the load a touch on the lad.

“We’ll have to see how it goes – if his team-mates can start to pull their weight it will be a lot easier for the guy, but who knows when you’ve got to line up week after week with Granit Xhaka?”
