Spurs’ manager Mauricio Pochettino is going to dust off his boots and play the next three games to resolve the centre back crisis.
Davinson Sanchez was red carded for a wild elbow against Watford today and the Argentine manager will start himself in a back three for the upcoming games.
Tottenham have only two fit centre backs in Eric Dier and Jan Vertonghen after Toby Alderweireld was ruled out with an injury.
A Spurs source said the manager would rather take to the pitch himself than trust his young compatriot Juan Foyth.
Poch had a decent career as a defender making over 250 appearances for Espanyol but retired in 2006.
Spurs insider Lee Satchell said: “It is a rare move for a Premier League manager to step on the pitch, unless you’re Pep Guardiola.
“Mauricio told me he reckons he could do a better job than the current defence who have been terrible in the last few games.
“Even though he is quite a small lad, he says he would never have been outmuscled by Salomon Rondon the way Sanchez was against West Brom.
“I’ve seen him play against the lads in training and he had Harry Kane in his pocket, this could be the kind of move that save Spurs’ season.
“He said his Adidas Predators are still in perfect condition from the 04/05 season and I’m looking forward to him keeping Apoel Nicosia quiet on Wednesday.”
