Rickie Lambert has been scared into retirement by rumours linking him with Crystal Palace.
Lambert has been without a club since leaving Cardiff City at the end of last season, but was forced to confirm his retirement to put an end to Palace’s interest.
He can now rest in peace without being called by Roy Hodgson every five minutes, with the promise of corner taking duty were he to join Palace.
An unofficial source, Lee Satchell, confirmed: “As soon as Christian Benteke’s injury was confirmed Rickie started to fear the worst.
“It didn’t take a genius to work out that Hodgson would try and move for him, especially when you consider he can genuinely take corners.
“So Rickie has done the smart thing and made his retirement official.
“He’s an England international who’s spent 19 years in the game. He shouldn’t have to go through trying to get on the end of Andros Townsend’s crossing. Not at his age.
“Why should he have to deal with Mamdou Sakho smashing balls at his chest as hard as humanly possible and expecting him to be able to control it?
“And what happens when Benteke returns and Hodgson tries to play Rickie at left wing?
“It’s done. Finito.
“But Hodgson had already got Scott Dann to add him to their WhatsApp group, so that’ll be a bit awkward.
“To be fair, he added Claudio Pizarro, Jeremie Aliadiere and Ishmael Miller as well so Rickie isn’t the only one.”
