Did you know that Karim Benzema is a part-time magician when he’s not running about up top for Real Madrid?
That can be the only explanation for the way he left three Atletico Madrid defenders standing like statues in the build up to Isco’s goal.
The Frenchman received the ball from a Cristiano Ronaldo long throw, tucked away in the corner, with former Man City defender Stefan Savic for company.
Savic was quickly joined by Diego Godin which, even for a striker of Benzema’s calibre, must be a pretty fearsome situation to find yourself in.
It then got worse when Jose Gimenez joined the chasing pack, hungry for some Madrid shin.
What happened next was pure sorcery.
Despite having seemingly no room to work with, Benzema took the ball towards the touchline, on the blindside of the three defenders, before disappearing off the pitch.
Benzema’s beautiful footwork opened up the pitch, and when he pulled it back to Toni Kroos it looked like he was moments away from the greatest assist in Champions League history.
Unfortunately Kroos wasn’t able to fire past Jan Oblak, who made a fine save, but Benzema’s good work didn’t go to waste as Isco tapped in from close range.
Bravo, Karim. Tres incroyable.
