The Football Association of Ireland tweeted on Sunday: “Thoughts tonight with the family of Ryan McBride and everyone involved with Derry City FC.”
McBride was an extremely popular figure with both his boyhood club and across the Irish league.
The defender spent his entire career with Derry City, spanning six years of service, and once said: “Other footballers have dreams of going across the water…but my dream as a boy was to play for Derry.”
Others took to social media to share their condolences:
Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.
