With the tie finely poised at 2-2 on aggregate and heading to extra time, United’s top scorer competed for a header and landed awkwardly on his knee, buckling it in an unnatural position.
The big Swede, who had been wasteful in front of goal throughout on the night, was unsurprisingly replaced by Anthony Martial as the 90 minutes came to an end.
And, given Ibrahimovic’s age of 35, such a nasty-looking knee injury could mean serious consequences for the rest of his career.
The similarities with Kurt Zouma’s knee injury for Chelsea last season, which kept him out for nearly a year, were obvious.
