Liverpool fans will tell you that, once upon time, Fernando Torres was the most fearsome striker in the world.
When he first arrived at Anfield back in 2007 Torres set the Premier League alight, scoring 33 goals in his debut campaign in England.
Torres joined the Reds from Atletico Madrid – a club where he was captain from the age of 19 – and was succeeded in the striking department at the Vicente Calderon by a certain Sergio Aguero.
But former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has revealed just how close he came to bringing Aguero to Merseyside too.
Benitez told Manchester Evening News: “I was Liverpool manager. They offered him to us as a young player for big, big money. But he signed for Atletico Madrid.
“He was a player that we knew. We were following him. We knew he was a very good player.”
Torres and Aguero terrorising defenders at the same club? Somebody run me a cold bath, quickly.
