Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi

Because this is going to get bumpy.

While you might know Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as great rivals on (and off) the field.

The pair, who are the biggest stars in their generation, could have been playing on the same side had Sir Alex Ferguson had his way.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, the former Manchester United manager so despised Real Madrid he tried to get the Portugal flyer to join Barcelona.

Meaning he would have linked up aside the Argentina legend.

Ronaldo’s time at Old Trafford was, obviously, a huge success and it was always inevitable the winger-cum-striker would move on.

La Liga was the dream but Fergie’s famous phrase about ‘not wanting to sell that mob a virus’ put a deal to Real Madrid in the balance around 2008.

And so the Scot set about trying to get Ronnie to sign for the Catalan giants.

But to no avail and Ferguson had to eventually relent.
