Gianluigi Buffon is one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, so why are FIFA players turning against him?
The Italian shot stopper, 38, boasts an incredible 88 overall in-game rating – but is still overlooked for the likes of Stoke City’s Jack Butland and Chelsea reserve Asmir Begovic instead.
Fans are so frustrated with the veteran keeper that they’ve started a Reddit forum discussing just how bad he is.
One user wrote: “I have his SBC card and it is seriously costing me games. He saves nothing. Seriously regretting putting the coins into getting him.”
Another wrote: “I find him to be awful 9/10 games. And then out of nowhere he’s incredible. Had a WL game with him where I only won because of him, I only stick by him because he cost me 100k to get.”
So why is Buffon getting panned?
One user thinks developers EA have given him a trait to make him stay on the line – making him easier to beat. Thankfully, there also seems to be a solution.
He writes: “If you just get him to come out manually it solves it though, but you have to rely more on your own timing.”
Buffon’s uncharacteristically poor in-game ability could also be due to factors involved in the “Butland effect”.
FIFA 17 players were quick to realise Butland performed way above his 82 rating, often outclassing much high-rated keepers.
It’s thought his unique combination of skill traits have somehow made him more well rounded.
He’s so good there even rumours EA has recently adjusted his coding to make him less impressive.
The opposite of this could be happening in Buffon’s case, with his combination of skills not gelling together properly – although this is purely speculation.
Either way, picking the Italian could be a massive mistake.
