Liverpool face an uphill battle to reach the final of the League Cup after they lost 1-0 in the first leg of their semi-final against Southampton.
Nathan Redmond scored in the 20th minute to give the Saints a vital lead, striking home past Loris Karius after Ragnar Klavan had made an error in the lead-up to the goal.
Karius was called into action minutes later as Redmond forced the keeper into a good save to keep the score at 1-0.
Not content with their one goal lead, the home side continued to press and Redmond had a glorious chance in the second half to get a second, but his dink hit the crossbar.
In a fairly drab match, the highlight of the game came when Daniel Sturridge was handed a full A4 piece of paper full of notes and told to deliver the instructions to the team.
The result gives Southampton a slender lead as they travel to Anfield for the second leg.
Another famous Anfield night, anyone? It’s happened before…
