If you’re a Wolves fan, then it’s time to pinch yourself.
Because arguably one of the best goalkeepers around will be playing at Molineux next season.
Earlier this week, it was confirmed that last season’s Championship title-winners have signed Portugal No 1 Rui Patricio for free from Sporting Lisbon, after he terminated his contract with the club last month.
In fact, Patricio is one of seven Sporting players who have left the club for free this summer, after a group of supporters broke into the Sporting headquarters and assaulted players and staff back in May.
Since then, several top clubs have been linked with shot-stopper, including Serie A giants Napoli.
But it seems the influence of super agent Jorge Mendes and his link with Wolves helped seal the deal.
Wolves already have a number of Mendes’ clients on their books, including Ruben Neves, Diego Jota and Helder Costa – all of whom helped them win promotion to the Premier League last season.
But Patricio is undoubtedly their best signing yet.
Two years ago, he was named in the UEFA Team of the Tournament after Portugal won Euro 2016, and we’ve seen the very best of him at the World Cup so far.
In fact, some of his saves in Portugal’s narrow 1-0 win over Morocco this afternoon were world class.
We’re not exaggerating.
On the 56th minute, Morocco had a decent chance to equalise from a free-kick in a dangerous area that was whipped into Portugal’s box by Hakim Ziyech.
As you’d expect, this has only hyped up Wolves fans even more, while the rest of us are seriously scratching our heads over how they’ve managed to pull off one of the coups of the summer.
